Mid-Term Break

I sat all morning in the college sick bay
Counting bells knelling classes to a close.
At two o'clock our neighbors drove me home.

In the porch I met my father crying--
He had always taken funerals in his stride--
And Big Jim Evans saying it was a hard blow.

The baby cooed and laughed and rocked the pram
When I came in, and I was embarrassed
By old men standing up to shake my hand

And tell me they were 'sorry for my trouble,'
Whispers informed strangers I was the eldest,
Away at school, as my mother held my hand

In hers and coughed out angry tearless sighs.
At ten o'clock the ambulance arrived
With the corpse, stanched and bandaged by the nurses.

Next morning I went up into the room. Snowdrops
And candles soothed the bedside; I saw him
For the first time in six weeks. Paler now,

Wearing a poppy bruise on his left temple,
He lay in the four foot box as in his cot.
No gaudy scars, the bumper knocked him clear.

Ay ay ay, that I am kinky and pure black; 
Kinkiness in my hair, uncivility on my lips; 
and my flat nose turns mozambique. 

Negress of intact hue, I cry and laugh 
the vibration of being a black statue; 
a chunk of night where my white 
teeth sparkle; 
to be a black spike

I’ve stayed in the front yard all my life.
I want a peek at the back
Where it’s rough and untended and hungry weed grows.
A girl gets sick of a rose.

I want to go in the back yard now
And maybe down the alley,
To where the charity children play.

They do some wonderful things.
They have some wonderful fun.
My mother sneers, but I say it’s fine
How they don’t have to go in at quarter to nine.

That George’ll be taken to Jail soon or late
(On account of last winter he sold our back gate).

But I say it’s fine. Honest, I do.

The night only adds to my confusion


I lay in bed about to fall asleep and my mind went on a rampage
Thinking of past embarrassing moments forgotten
But then I thought of my life’s last page
And my motionless body in the ground rotten

Yes, death came in mind
And the unknown frontier after it
But it is what we don’t know we fear
And from our brain does faith emit

What is after death?
Is it god’s everlasting love in heaven, or just a simple end
Should we be scared for our last breath
Or be saying good-bye forever to a lost family member or friend

What is the meaning of this life?
That is the question of our existence
Why should we go through life with strife
Is this life purposeful or nonsense

Are we all alone in the universe?
Is there anyone else out there?
And is that other life as diverse?
Do we share similar thoughts or do they not even care?

Am I alone?
Does everyone around me exist?
How do I know you aren’t a drone
Am I alone in the cold mist

Why do we ask so many questions?
And why aren’t they answered?
Are we supposed to just accept the moon and sun
Will these answers always baffled and scattered?

I should just think of my future one step at a time
But what happens when we are at our last step
Stop! Stop! I should be sleeping not thinking of rhymes
It is 1 o’clock in the morning, maybe the coffee kept me pepped

I just need to sleep and stop all these disturbing thoughts
But the thoughts won’t end
Because as long as we have curiosity we will have lots
And our thoughts will only extend

When You Are Old


When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

Mediation

At the dinner table, before the thrown
plate, but after the bitter claim,
in the one beat of silence
before the parents declare war

their child, who had been temporarily
invisible, but who had from school
a catechism, speaks: "Would you like me
to help solve the conflict?"  Silence.

They can't look at each other.  A glance
would sear the soul.  A wall of fire seethes,
Maginot line through the butter plate,
split salt from pepper, him from her.  Silence.

So the child speaks: "Three rules, then:
One--you have to let each other finish.
Two--you have to tell the truth. Three--
you have to want to solve the conflict.

If you say yes, we will solve it.
I love you.  What do you say?"

I

Eating Poetry

Ink runs from the corners of my mouth.
There is no happiness like mine.
I have been eating poetry.

The librarian does not believe what she sees.
Her eyes are sad
and she walks with her hands in her dress.

The poems are gone.
The light is dim.
The dogs are on the basement stairs and coming up.

Their eyeballs roll,
their blond legs burn like brush.
The poor librarian begins to stamp her feet and weep.

She does not understand.
When I get on my knees and lick her hand,
she screams.

I am a new man,
I snarl at her and bark,
I romp with joy in the bookish dark.
